Located at 1700 1st St NW, this lively spot has carved a niche for itself by offering an eclectic menu that ranges from crave-worthy breakfast burritos and richly layered cappuccinos to succulent shrimp tacos and iconic chicken and waffles.
Step inside Big Bear Cafe, and you are immediately greeted by a warm, welcoming atmosphere punctuated by rustic wooden tables and leafy vines adorning the exterior—evoking the romantic feel of an Italian piazza. The ambience, paired with a thoughtfully curated soundtrack, creates the perfect backdrop whether you're grabbing a quick coffee, settling in for a leisurely breakfast, or enjoying a casual lunch or dinner with friends. The cafe buzzes comfortably with patrons from all walks of life: freelancers, friends, families, and couples all soaking up the cozy and vibrant energy.
The menu is a delightful exploration of flavors, boasting dishes that satisfy both classic cravings and adventurous palates. Imagine biting into the buttery, flaky layers of an orange poppyseed muffin or savoring the aromatic spices in a falafel wrap that’s crisp on the outside with a tender, flavorful interior. The breakfast offerings, like the cinnamon French toast or the hearty breakfast burrito, are perfect morning indulgences that set the tone for a great day ahead. For those seeking something heartier, their fried chicken sandwich and cheese burger come highly recommended, bringing rich, savory satisfaction with every bite.
Big Bear Cafe shines particularly bright in its beverage selection, offering expertly crafted coffee concoctions that cater to both casual sippers and aficionados. Picture the silky smoothness of a cortado, the floral warmth of a lavender latte, or the refreshingly invigorating chill of an iced mocha. Each drink feels thoughtfully made, with attention to detail that speaks volumes about the care Big Bear places in its craft. One guest was especially impressed by the quality and presentation of their London fog tea, which was steeped loose leaf in a charming custom tea bag, breaking the mold from the typical “to-go” experience.
Beyond its daily menu, Big Bear Cafe’s versatility truly shines through its role as a welcoming event venue. Whether hosting a lively brunch, an intimate gathering, or even a large-scale celebration, the space adapts effortlessly. This was beautifully exemplified by a recent 60-person wedding, where meticulous event management and attentive staff enhanced the joyous occasion, earning heartfelt praise for both the venue and the thoughtfully prepared menu — in particular, the tender, flavorful beef short ribs were a star attraction.
What truly sets Big Bear Cafe apart, however, is not just its flavorful menu or impressive event capabilities but the genuine warmth and friendliness of its team. Visitors consistently note the approachable, smiley service that makes every visit feel personal and memorable. The staff’s welcoming nature fosters a sense of community, where regulars and newcomers alike feel right at home. Adding to this community vibe, the cafe hosts a fantastic farmers market each Sunday morning, enlivening the neighborhood with a vibrant array of vintage vendors and local treasures.
While some patrons have noted that certain food prices might feel a bit steep, many agree that the overall experience—the quality ingredients, welcoming ambiance, and exceptional service—offer compelling value in a city like Washington, DC. The balance of approachable, creative dishes and a relaxing setting means Big Bear Cafe isn’t just a place to eat or drink; it’s a destination to savor moments, connect with people, and enjoy the small joys of daily life.
For anyone seeking a multifaceted dining and gathering spot that captures the spirit of New American cuisine with a café twist, Big Bear Cafe is a hidden gem well worth exploring. Whether you’re craving a perfectly brewed macchiato, a flavorful falafel wrap, or looking for a unique event venue, Big Bear’s inviting charm and delicious offerings promise an experience that satisfies both your palate and your heart.
Nice cafe, lovely setting, nice people. Friendly servers and smiley faces when you come in, lovely setting (vines on the outside of the building which made in look like an Italian place, and nice wooden tables inside and out), and nice atmosphere with a good soundtrack! Coffee and drinks were surprisingly cheap compared to the other places in Washington DC. Food was overpriced for what it was, which was the only small downside. Having said that, everywhere in DC seems v pricey!
We hosted our 60-person wedding at Big Bear Cafe in May 2025, and we are so thrilled we did. From the start of our venue search, the event manager Bri was attentive and organized. On the day itself, the staff were so proactive, helpful and kind. Many guests told us that they loved the venue, and that the food was absolutely delicious (the beef short ribs especially got rave reviews!). Staying in Big Bear's guest house next door made getting ready and staging decor for the day especially easy. And it was fun to invite folks back the next morning to debrief over coffee and breakfast, once it re-opened as a coffee shop. Highly recommend hosting an event here!
I enjoyed a flat white and breakfast burrito here. The overall atmosphere was lovely to enjoy my breakfast and read for a bit. Lots of people were working from their laptops (they have wifi), chatting with one another, or grabbing something to-go. The staff was friendly, and there was ample seating inside and out even on a busy day. The drink prices are reasonable for DC.
What a cute little gem of a cafe. Ordered a blondie brownie and a London fog tea. I was expecting the tea to be thrown in a to-go cup with a generic cheap tea bag inside, but NOPE. It was put in a huge cup, and it was loose leaf put in a custom tea bag pouch. It was lightly but perfectly sweetened and so good. And that brownie was PERFECT. It was gluten free too, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from the flavor and texture. Will definitely make a visit if I’m ever in the area again.
This place is such a vibe. I discovered it during my daily commute to Washington Hospital Center. What makes it most exceptional beyond the delicious flat white and drip coffee is the staff. I feel like I've known them forever. They are warm and friendly with wonderful personalities. Lastly, there's a wonderful farmers market on Sunday's from 9-1 that is full of great vendors selling vintage clothing, organic meats and veggies, flowers and pastries galore.
Had our wedding here and had a wonderful experience. They were easy to work with, the staff was great, and the food and drinks were delicious. I would highly recommend them if you are considering having your event here.
Lovely little café, and a lovely little neighborhood, they also have a farmers market outside on Sunday mornings, which makes for a full Sunday experience: cute latte, and baked goods and a stroll of the stands, what more could you ask for? I won’t claim it. It’s the best coffee I’ve ever had, and I wouldn’t come here for a meal, but the baked goods are. .. good , and they have some pretty neat flavors for seasonal coffee drinks
